About 1945 the Federal Communications Commission authorized 12 television channels in the Very-High-Frequency range for commercial broadcast. These channels are each 6 MHz wide and their channel allotment is as follows: Channel 1, with a frequency range of 44-50 MHz, was originally allocated, but was never used and has been discontinued. Later, the FCC allocated 70 more television channels, located in the Ultra-High-Frequency range. These channels, too, are 6 MHz wide; they lie between 470 and 890 MHz. Since more than one station can use the same channel without interference, provided the stations are at least 150 miles apart, these 82 channels can accommodate thousands of stations.
